Need to Create or Update Your Resume? Consider These 5 Things First.

Before you type a single word, take a step back and think through these five things:

1. Execution vs. Strategy

Are you showcasing the tasks you’ve completed or the strategic impact you’ve made? Knowing which side you fall on will help you create a resume that fits the roles you’re applying for. If you’ve moved into more strategic work but your resume still reads like an executor, it’s time for an update.

🔎 Data matters for both.

  • Execution roles: Focus on day-to-day wins. How many projects did you complete? How much time or money did you save?

  • Strategy roles: Highlight big-picture results. Did you influence company direction? Increase revenue? Lead cross-functional initiatives?

2. Industry Priorities

What are the key deliverables and metrics that matter in your industry? Use the right terminology and emphasize accomplishments that resonate with the companies you’re targeting. Speaking their language makes it easy for them to see your fit.

3. Annual Review Documents

Don’t reinvent the wheel. Your past performance reviews are goldmines for metrics and accomplishments. Dig into those documents to find measurable wins you can highlight.

4. Career Goals

Where are you headed? Your resume should position you for your next role, not just summarize your last one. Take a look at job descriptions one level up. Have you done any stretch work or taken on responsibilities beyond your title? If so, that’s your proof of readiness for what’s next.

5. Critical Job Responsibilities

Review job descriptions of your target roles. Are you demonstrating the experience that matches? Keywords matter. Align your responsibilities and achievements with what companies are actively seeking.
